Loss of some brassicas
The sun was too strong for the cauliflower and kohlrabi transplants and they died from being sun bleached. I replanted 4 Romanesco Cauliflower, 5 Purple Vienna Kohlrabi, and 1 American Purple Top Rutabaga on 2026-04-22. These should be quick to sprout up, and given they will sprout in the garden, I needn’t worry about hardening off and sun shock. Duly noted next year to not bother starting brassicas indoor. If anything, start them milk jugs outside. From the looks of it both lettuce and kale do quite well in the milk jugs.
Transplanting of the onion starts
I placed Zebrune Shallot Onion and Yellow Sweet Spanish Utah along the west and southern border of the City Community Garden in two rows. Spacing starts roughly 4 inches apart.
Started carrot seeds
Along a portion of the southern border of the City Community Garden, next to the Zebrune Shallot Onion I planted a row of Scarlet Nantes Carrot.
Started the sunchokes
I have received one of two orders of sunchokes. This one being an order from Gurney’s Jerusalem Artichokes. The 2 pound bag ended up being 14 sunchokes. Those were spaced roughly 12 inches apart in the northern most row.
I am expecting the other order of the Hudson Valley Seed Company to arrive come Monday (2026-04-27). This will only be 1/2 a pound so likely there will be 2 - 3 sunchokes. Given where I planted the sunchokes, and where I intend the corn, it looks like the Coral Fountain Love-Lies-Bleeding Amaranth will be more in the middle part of row 5 rather than the south side of row 5.
Pics from the efforts

Getting seed potatoes ready to chit
After inspecting the German Butterball and Yukon Gold Potatoes, I decided a couple of them were large enough to cut in half. After cutting I now have 6 German Butterball and 5 Yukon Gold Potatoes to plant. That is once the cuts have scabbed over and the current eyes fully chit. In the meantime, I am storing them in the cupboard next to the flour sugar and grocery store onions.
